Yann-Eric EICHENBERGER
Sculpture

1974 - 2008

Born in 1974, I learned to speak and walk in the Artistic Community of Piégon, founded in Provence by my grandfather, a "exiled" painter from Geneva.

At six years old, my father left the artistic life for agriculture, marking a life change.

18 years old: Lacking interest in studies, I learned the basics of modeling with my grandfather, Jean-Pierre Eichenberger, based on two major principles:

  • "Light must circulate" and

  • "The demonstration of the opposite"...

In 1996, I created a monumental sculpture 30 meters long and 6 meters high with him, which was a turning point. A year of daily work that I now consider my only "art school."

In parallel, a second mentor, Guy Leriche, taught me intensively how to "realize and finish" my sculptures, working with Bollène clay, an exceptional material I worked with for about ten years.

2000: First solo exhibition in Gières (38), supported by a cultural official who discovered my work in the workshop at that time, located in an old military fort. I managed around fifteen artist studios of all kinds on-site. The exhibition was a success, leading me to decide to devote myself entirely to sculpture and resign from my position.

2001-2008: "Ceramic Sculpture" period using Bollène clay (chamotte), figurative female works, large pieces up to 1.80 meters, with exhibitions in the southeastern region (from Aix-en-Provence to Geneva), art markets, experiments in various "staging" of sculptures, colorations, oxides, and fumigations. However, the discoveries from the first olive wood sculptures from 2004 have remained with me. I completed my last clay sculptures, carbon-blackened in the summer of 2008.

2008 – 2018

From 2008 to today, immense pleasure in wood sculpture. I work with local essences (Baronnies/Provence), gathered from the hillside, as a way to understand the tree and its life, the landscape, its daily life, and what shaped it. I prefer to seek out "dead-standing" trunks, i.e., lifeless yet still upright, as this state allows for an immediate appreciation of the wood's qualities and defects. Using a chainsaw for rough shaping, followed by numerous sanding stages, I aim to reveal both the wood's graphic quality and to shape the planes and curves.

Exhibitions and installations: Private, collective, or solo exhibitions, private artistic events, Collectif Artemis, Musical Sculptures...

2014-2015: Transition to color, with the human figure as the central subject, a wooden people searching for our vegetal counterpart... Emiliani Gallery in Dieulefit.

2016: Introduction of bronze sculptures. Exhibitions in Belgium. Alfons Blomme Gallery, Roeselare. Beginning of collaboration with Déclicart Gallery and Charles Diehl.

2017-2018: Established links with Exametal Foundry in Barcelona, starting with FAP Foundry in Lyon and Barthélémy Foundry in Crest. Current artistic projects involve large outdoor pieces, likely in bronze. Participations in salons with Déclicart Gallery, Vaison-la-Romaine Cathedral, Montpellier, Lille, Aix-en-Provence. Exhibitions in Paris (Artemper Gallery, Peugeot Space). Group exhibitions in Monaco (Gemlucart), Mouans-Sartoux (Château de Castellaras), etc.
